South Africa is one of many countries where enhanced leadership is sought as a means of improving learner outcomes. The Department of Education introduced a new national programme for principals and aspiring principals in 2007. This paper reports the main findings of the longitudinal evaluation of this programme, and links them to insights from the literature. The paper concludes with recommendations about the future of leadership development in South Africa.
